About Ulverston

A festival and market town in South Lakeland

Ulverston, once part of Lancashire is now in the County of Cumbria and administered by Ulverston Town Council and South Lakeland District Council.  Located at the top of the Furness Peninsula it is well positioned for access to both the sea in Morecambe Bay and the Lake District mountains popular with walkers and other outdoor enthusiasts.

Ulverston, known as the Festival Town, generates myriad major events throught the year which not only are supported locally but bring in visitors from further afield: Ulverston WalkFest, Flag Fortnight, Print Fest, Dickensian Festival, Charter Festival, music festivals, buddhist festivals and more...

Ulverston has been the birthplace of many great Ulverstonians most notably Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame and Sir John Barrow in commemoration of whom was built the 'lighthouse' monument on Hoad Hill.  George Fox, founder of the Society of Friends or 'Quakers' whilst not born in Ulverston came on many an occasion to visit Judge Fell and his wife Margaret at Swarthmoor Hall and married Margaret after the death of Judge Fell.

Swarthmoor Hall is one of many beautiful, historic buildings in and around the town.  Conishead Priory, previously on the site of a leper hospital in the 12th century, became a priory in 1338, a hospital in World War 2 and is now an important centre for buddhist studies.

Ulverston is served by pubs offering real ales and entertainment and a range of places to eat.  Entertainment is provided by the Coronation Hall, the Roxy Cinema and smaller venues with hotels full of character and charm located in the centre of the town.

Ulverston is just bursting with things to do and see.  What more could you want?
