Ulverston WalkFest was started in 1999 by Jean and Steve Povey. In 2013 a new organising team was formed on the occasion of Jean and Steve's retirement and we continue to build on the firm foundations established by them.
Our very own Green Deal
One of the aims of the walkfest has always been to respect and care for the environment and cherish the opportunities that nature gives us to enjoy ourselves. To this end we are continually looking to reduce our impact on the environment.
Everyone involved in the festival are volunteers. Some of the walks leaders are professional people but kindly provide their skills and expertise free of charge to benefit the walking festival. We are very grateful to our sponsors especially for their support. Their kind generosity has enabled us to launch our new website, keep the cost of the walks and events at a low level and attract well-known celebrity speakers for future walkfests. Any profits made will go towards the continuity of the festival. Our walks leaders, many of whom have supported the festival for years, are experienced and knowledgeable in their area of expertise. Many of our walk leaders are mountain rescue personnel.
Early in 2012 we approached the Graphic Design Department of the University of Cumbria to offer a project for the students to design a new style leaflet, logo and poster. There were four submissions and that of Toby Garland was chosen as the one that best fulfilled the image we wished to create for the future.
It is with grateful thanks to the generosity of Cumbria County Council Neighbourhood Forum that has enabled us to launch our website. We can now easily access a greater amount of people from a larger geographical area.
Funding from The Townlands Trust enables us to invite well-known speakers to future walking festivals.
Also grateful thanks go to the Keswick to Barrow Walk, the Mary Portas Fund and Ulverston Town Council.
